Amare Stoudemire fined $50K

The NBA fined Amare Stoudemire $50,000 for his use of a gay slur in a Twitter message, the league announced Tuesday.

Stu Jackson, the league's executive vice president of basketball operations, announced the fine Tuesday in a release, calling Stoudemire's language offensive and derogatory.

The New York Knicks forward apologized to a fan on Sunday for using a gay slur in response to a crude tweet in which the fan admonished the All-Star to "make up for this past season."

The fan tweeted his comment on Saturday and received a direct message containing an expletive and the slur from the account Twitter verifies as Stoudemire's. The fan posted a screen shot of the direct message. Direct messages can be seen by only the sender and the recipient.

I tell you, the NBA doesn't tolerate this shit at all...good.

Also, celebrities and twitter is a deadly combination, too...allows people who should always keep their mouths shut to NOT keep their mouths shut.

Stoudemire is no longer one of my favorites due to doing great things for the Suns.

Athlete on Twitter allow for them to receive comments from the general online public and leads to these back-and-forth where they come out. If an athlete is willing to do that they should be prepared to ignore them or respond in a way that doesn't led to bad press and unnecessary distractions for the team. Or don't use Twitter.

Easy for me to say since I doubtless said stupid things at DU. Just not of the slurs variety.

"I am a huge supporter of civil rights for all people," he said. "I am disappointed in myself for my statement to a fan. I should have known better and there is no excuse."

At least there was none of that "if I offended anyone" shit and it sounds like he means it.
