"Sensational!" - Winding Way - 2012 Rancho Bernardo Handicap

Favored Winding Way emerged as a female sprinter to watch this season when she overcame a hopelessly tardy start to win the $150,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (gr. III) at Del Mar Aug. 19.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Winding Way was last by a long ways down the backstretch in the field of seven after she dwelt at the start. The 7-5 pick was forced five wide as she made her bid leaving the turn. And despite showing some greenness when lugging in through the lane, Winding Way straightened away in the final furlong to run down Sugarinthemorning in the final strides for a half-length victory. Rumor finished third.

at the start, then had to run an extra x number of yards when going wide. Nice. She came over big time on that horse though.
