(6,278 posts)Though in his defense, given that playing a revenue sport effectively is a full-time job, I'd consider it more fair to pay players and give them an opportunity to take classes full-time when they're not playing, rather than have the value of their education undercut by the need to major in eligibility. Athletics does frequently dictate which courses of study are realistic, and most players would focus on education MUCH better after their dreams of stardom ends.

(16,113 posts)and may need an education? That's ridiculous, everyone knows Ohio State regularly cranks out NFL QB's. Just ask Terrelle Pryor, Toddy Boeckman, Troy Smith, Justin Zwick, Craig Krenzel, Steve Bellisari, Joe Germaine, Stanley Jackson, Bobby Hoying, Kirk Herbstreit, Kent Graham, Greg Frey, Tom Tupa, Jim Karsatos and Mike Tomczak (all their QB's for the last 30 years).
In all fairness, Tomczak and Tupa did play in the NFL for about 15 years (though Tupa mostly as a punter, and Tomczak as a backup QB a majority of the time), and the jury is still out on Pryor.

That being said, what a stupid thing to say, even if he was joking. (I have no idea if he was joking, but I would guess he was.) Still, that is simply not acceptable. Someone needs to sit him down and explain that to him. I'm sure they're on it.
