Jason Giambi interviews for Rockies' manager job
Given Robin Ventura's sucess with the White Sox and Mike Matheny's Cardinals on the verge of a World Series berth, the Rockies are intrigued by the idea of hiring a manager with no coaching experience.
They interviewed fan favorite Jason Giambi on Thursday, according to a club source, completing their meetings with in-house candidates.
He remains in the mix for the job.
The Rockies have tentatively planned to interview external options, but they had not formalized a list as of mid-week.
Giambi, 41, has long been respected by the Rockies' front office, his opinion valued since he arrived in September of 2009 as a pinch-hitter and reserve first baseman. Giambi, who could not be reached for comment, has indicated that he would retire from playing to become the Rockies' manager. A free agent, Giambi underwent hernia surgery last week to keep open the possibility of playing if there is interest....
