J.R. Celski sets short-track speedskating world record

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2012/10/21/jr-celski-sets-short-track-speedskating-world-record/1648375/

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — American J.R. Celski become the first short-track speedskater to break the 40-second barrier in the 500 meters, setting a world record of 39.973 second Sunday in a World Cup final.

In the speedskating world, this is a big fucking deal. Like Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile big.

That's an average speed of 45 km/h or 28 mph over 4 1/2 laps of the 111m track. Top speed is right around 30 mph. Wow.

Congratulations, JR!
