Jack Taylor scores 138 points, an NCAA record

Jack Taylor was in a groove, a Mariana Trench kind of groove, Tuesday night.

The Grinnell College guard scored an NCAA-record 138 points in a performance that desperately cries out for a smart-alecky descriptor. (He hung a 138 burger on Faith Baptist Bible?) Anyway, Grinnell won, 179-104. Let’s leave it at that.

“I felt pretty confident tonight,” he told ESPN after the Division III game in Grinnell, Iowa. “Most of my shots were off the dribble in isolation from the perimeter and that’s kind of my game, working off the dribble. I felt pretty confident when I got the ball tonight. That’s for sure.”

Playing 36 minutes, Taylor broke the NCAA scoring record by 25 points and made 52 of his 108 attempts, firing off a shot every 20 seconds. (Perhaps he should change his name to Chuck. Chuck Taylor…hmmmm.) Three-pointers? There were a ton of those: he made 27 of 71 attempts. Free throws? He made 7 of 10 attempts. (And, yes, the box score is ridiculously fascinating.)

The coach should be drummed out of the business. 108 attempts by one guy in a 40 minute game?

And, i'm not terribly impressed by the scoring figures if it took the guy 108 shots to do it.

He shot under 50%, he shot under 40% from the college three, and only 70% from the line.

This was a set up to embarass the other team and should not be lauded.

"Under coach David Arseneault, the Pioneers press and shoot 3s like nobody else in the country in any level. They've led the nation in scoring for 17 of the past 19 seasons while ranking first nationally in 3-point shooting for the 15 of those past 19 years. But none of them have had a night quite like Taylor – who never saw this coming."

True Taylor now has a record, but it really is nothing noteworthy in regard to athletic achievement. Grinnell's style of play is mostly designed to make the coach money by selling books and videos of his "coaching theory". It is a nice con actually and the hoopla over Taylor's feat should make the coach even more money peddling his BS videos and books.

Here is a good overview of Grinnell's program:

Jack Taylor, of the Grinnell College Pioneers, scored 138 points in a game last night, against Faith Baptist Bible College. It's a mind blowing number, shattering the old NCAA mark of 113, and it's being trumpeted as one of sports' all-time individual achievements. It is not. It is bullshit. It is just the latest incarnation of Grinnell's decades-old strategy of seeking media attention for records achieved through a complete bastardization of basketball.
David Arseneault is the man behind the plan. Since becoming Grinnell coach in 1989, Arseneault has focused less on putting together a successful team and more on getting his players' names in the record books. And, not incidentally, selling books and videos touting his innovative "system." At least three separate times a Grinnell player has set the D-III single-game scoring record, and each one has gotten national attention. In 1998, Jeff Clement went for 77 points, and received a story in Sports Illustrated. Last season Griffin Lentsch scored 89 points, and got a feature on ESPN.com. Today, Taylor's 138-point game is everywhere.

But it's much more than just taking a lot of threes, or winning the turnover battle. According to a former Grinnell player who took part in one of those record-setting games, the game plan is designed from the outset to get a specific player the scoring mark, even at the expense of making a mockery of the game. The player told Deadspin:

"The strategy was to use a full court press after a made basket, with the caveat that [the player seeking the record] would not cross into the defensive side of the court. So, after our opponents broke our press, we were essentially playing four-on-five, which enabled the other team to take quicker shots and fall into our game plan.

"The rationale is to essentially trade off a quick two or more attempts at lower probability 3-point shots. Given the high pace required for the system, Grinnell shifts in five players every 30 to 45 seconds. Within each shift there is a primary shooter who will take the bulk of threes (or shots) during the shift."

I don't think much of the scheme at all, but I can't fault Taylor for carrying it out to perfection. Let's hope his record lasts at least as long as the one he broke did.
