New Orleans Pelicans Unveil Official Team Logo

It’s official. The New Orleans Hornets will be known as the New Orleans Pelicans at the beginning of the 2013-14 NBA season.

The team made the announcement via NBA.com late on Thursday afternoon.

New owner Tom Benson and the organization held a press conference on Thursday to publicly unveil the new logo and uniforms.

As you can see, the team has ditched its old color scheme in favor of a new one that includes a primary emphasis on blue, a secondary on gold, and red as a tertiary.

While some may not like the idea of a pelican representing the franchise, it has origins as the state bird and in the official Louisiana nickname, the “Pelican State.”

It's a traditional New Orleans moniker and there are certainly worse names in the League. (How did the Brooklyn Nets not change their name when they had a golden opportunity? )

The "New Orleans" especially looks like something you'd see on their ferry boats. The whole color sceme is also VERY similar to the Saint's logo.

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican. (or belly can)
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week,
But I’m damned if I see how the helican.

Fuck You, Pelicans Are Awesome: A Defense Of The NBA’s Best New Team Name

So it looks like the New Orleans Hornets are going to change their name to become the Pelicans. You look around, and there are a bunch of smartasses making fun of this new name. Oh, a pelican, that's intimidating, they sneer. Well, here's what's up. These people don't know anything about good team names, and they sure as shit don't know anything about pelicans.
You're probably picturing a big, clumsy poof of a bird stumbling around in the shallows, picking at weeds. Wrong. The pelican is fearsome. Take a raven, for example: it's omnivorous. It eats bugs, and seeds, and fruit, and carrion. Compared to the well-rounded citizen that is the raven, the pelican is the serial killer of birds. Not only is it a carnivore—it is a hypercarnivore. (That's a scientific term; look it up.) The pelican eats meat, and only meat. The pelican doesn't eat anything that didn't used to be alive. What's more—unlike an eagle or a falcon—the pelican almost never scavenges someone else's kill. It craves warm flesh, so it gets the job done itself.
