The poet, Ernest Thayer, worked for one of the SF papers. Stockton, 60 miles inland but inches above sea level, would have been muddy enough in the days before flood control. The Stockton Ports of the Class A California League (presently the A's affiliate) even changed their name to the Mudville Nine for a short time!
