Controversy over R******s name travels to Denver for Broncos game

The national campaign to change the name of the Washington Redskins has come to Denver, with a planned protest and an advertising campaign scheduled to air on "Denver's Sports Station" 102.3 ESPN in advance of the Broncos game Sunday.

It's part of a re-energized movement to remove Indian team mascots and other stereotypes from popular culture.

"We want the players and the coaches to be aware there is national attention on this," said American Indian Movement of Colorado organizer Glenn Morris, who will lead a protest near the visiting team entrance to Sports Authority Field at 10 a.m. Sunday. "We want to pique their consciences to get them to start pressuring owner Dan Snyder from the inside out."

Radio ads paid for by the Oneida Indian Nation, part of the national "Change the Mascot" campaign, will air in Denver through the 2 p.m. kickoff Sunday. Similar ads, telling Snyder to drop the mascot because it is racially offensive, were pulled by two Washington, D.C., stations hours before they were to air.

One can very quickly see whether this is right or wrong by imagining what the comparable names would be for other groups of people. Costas was polite enough to not enumerate those names, as he was speaking on national TV during the family hour, but obviously it would go something like this:

- The Detroit Blackskins
- The San Francisco Slant-eyes
- The Albuquerque Brownskins
- The Green Bay Obese Whiteys

and so on. These are all highly offensive. Just as offensive as "redskins".

It is time that franchise move at least into the 20th century. There is no particular connection between the DC area, the game of football and native Americans. They should pick a new name, just as the Baltimore Ravens and Oklahoma City Thunder did, and embrace it.

And while we're at it, can we get the Utah Jazz to change their name? That makes no sense at all. New Orleans wants their name back.

I don't know if he is a jerk or not. Everybody who rises to that level of the national media has to be opportunistic, and their peers will often regard them as jerks because it is ultimately a zero sum game. The meek don't inherit those positions. Opportunistic jerk or not, I believe his argument makes it pretty obvious what is the right thing to do.
