Super Bowl XLVIII committee tells fans: No tailgating allowed

The Super Bowl XLVIII committee has spoken: There will be no tailgating allowed at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 2, 2014 prior to the NFL’s championship game.

Committee CEO Al Kelly told ESPN.com’s Jane McManus: “You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in you car. And provided you’re in the boundaries of a single parking space, you’ll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However you’re not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you’re not going to be able to take out a grill and you’re not going to be able to take up more than one parking space.”

Kelly also revealed more plans for the logistics of this season’s Super Bowl, and they’re somewhat unusual. Fans will not be allowed to to park and walk to the East Rutherford, N.J. stadium; nor will they be able to arrive via taxi or limo, because only vehicles with parking passes will be allowed near the premises.

There will be 13,000 parking spaces available for the game, at a stadium that will hold approximately 80,000 fans that night. The only two other options available to fans, per McManus: The committee will charter a bus called the Fan Express, which will cost $51 and pick up and drop off passengers at nine locations around the region. Fans can also take N.J. Transit to the MetLife Stadium stop.

Well, considering there will be a blizzard pounding the city, and DiBlasio will have shut everything down, it really will end up being a moot point and an embarrassment to the NFL.
