Guy (on either ESPN or MLBN) said when reviewing old films, the running over the catcher thing didn't really start until the 60's or so. Most times the running tried a dart slide to get his foot under the catcher's crotch and forc the foot out of the way.

I don't remember who was talking, which is why i can't remember which network i saw it on.

But, that would suggest it isn't the old timers, but the middle age timers who would be thinking badly of this.

like Mike Scioscia did how is the runner supposed to score. this gives the entire advantage to the catcher. If the catcher is not allowed to block the plate then it's fine. Let's look at the details.

Once they eliminate the double play take out slide, baseball is no longer a sport.

Contact is what differenciates a sport from a game.

Why not just concede the run and eliminate running home at all? Hell, why not just eliminate running altogether? After all, I've seen players turn ankles, twist knees and tear Achilles' tendons just getting out of the batter's box. And who can forget Moises Alou tearing up his ankle without being touched? Running is dangerous.

We can have the batting practice screened pitcher serve them up to the armor clad hitter and simply estimate which base he would have reached by placement of the hit. If a fielder can't get to a ball at a brisk walk, we'll just call it a single. A gapper is an automatic double. Something off the base of the fence in centerfield is a triple. We can't risk someone running into the wall, can we?

Baseball used to be a tough guy's game. Chin music, spiking, take outs, diving into the stands and yes, blocking the plate. Now it's a bunch of primadonnas that go on the DL for a hangnail and whine about bench chatter.

Pathetic.
