http://deadspin.com/who-are-the-best-and-worst-nfl-announcers-1484851508Above is the overall tally by network, but it's broken down by team and by specific announcers. Using these metrics, Chris Myers is the single worst play-by-play man working football today, while Joe Buck is the best. As for color commentators, the retiring Dan Dierdorf takes the crown as the worst, with Mike Mayock earning honors as the best.
Mike Mayock?? Oh my!!

(68,918 posts)As a Packer fan, it's ridiculous the bias they have against the team.
Joe Buck doing baseball is just as bad.

(11,443 posts)Going way back, Ray Scott, Pat Summerall and Curt Gowdy were all better to me than any of the current ones. Joe Buck can't carry his father's jock strap!

Mike Mayock is a cliché spewing moron, Nessler is pretty good.
My favorite play-by-play man is Kevin Harlan. I also like the Ian Eagle/Dan Fouts booth. Don't really like any of the FOX guys besides Sam Rosen and Dick Stockton (maybe Kenny Albert on his best day). I feel every FOX broadcast is bush league compared to the superior broadcast and presentation that CBS airs. Then again, CBS is the gold standard when it comes to sports broadcasting.

(9,709 posts)in fact, I think he does a credible job. His partner Joe Buck is a whole different matter though. He's arrogant, despite not knowing as much about football as he thinks, and is biased against teams from the Bay Area. It's not as obvious with the 49ers, but in baseball it's pretty clear he hates the Giants..I really don't have a favorite, all of them have some major faults and can get real annoying, but if I had to choose..I'd go with Jim Nantz and Phil Simms I guess.

(31,173 posts)or rather, I choose not to listen too closely since they're pretty much telling me what I can see on the field.
I do listen to color commentators, and while the likes of Dierdorf and Aikman come off as flat sometimes, their commentary/opinion is based on having played the game, and that can be enlightening. Former coaches (i.e. John Gruden) comment (or should) on the bigger picture -- coaching and game strategy, and general position play.
Much depends on the game they're calling. Even the best can't save a bad contest.
I know announcers undergo auditions and I'm sure some degree of celebrity is taken into account in their hire. Probably too much celebrity.
