Personally, I think that they probably provide little or no help for a Thoroughbred during a race. But, what the hell do I know? I am glad NYRA approved the use of the strips for the Belmont. The whole issue was a distraction, IMHO.

(56,177 posts)and I gather the issue was because Belmont is in NY and its against state law...ok in other places.

(1,607 posts)Harness horses in NY can use them. Now thoroughbreds can use them. They may stop exercise induced pulmonary bleeding which would eliminate the need for Lasix. I was interested in what the Sports group thought of this issue as it relates to the Triple Crown. Would it detract from the achievement if CC won the TC with a nasal strip? Should an asterisk be added to the record book? Or is it just a piece of equipment like a shadow roll, front wraps or a bar shoe?

(1,607 posts)Back in 2011 in became an issue when I'll Have Another was trying to win the TC. At that time NYRA stewards told trainer Doug O'Neill he wouldn't be allowed to use a nasal strip in the Belmont. NYRA harness tracks allowed them.

(56,177 posts)They're making such a big deal about it now...the media...makes me wonder why it wasn't so controversial back then...probably the nature of the media, though, and not the issue itself.

I think NYRA didn't want to appear to be condoning someone that the public thought was a cheater. Now, Sherman comes along and they change their ruling. I think it was a good call.
