Giants' Yusmeiro Petit retires 46th straight to set MLB record

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit etched himself into Major League history by retiring his 46th consecutive batter in the third inning of Thursday's game against the Rockies.

Petit, who entered the game having retired 38 hitters in a row over a span of seven appearances, retired the first eight Rockies he faced to eclipse the record of 45 set by Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox from July 18-28, 2009.

Petit amassed five strikeouts in his final surge past Buehrle, including Colorado's Jackson Williams and Charlie Culberson to tie and break the record, respectively, in the third inning. The AT&T Park crowd rewarded Petit with a standing ovation after Culberson went down swinging.

Petit, 29, began amassing his standard-setting total at the end of a July 22 start at Philadelphia. Then came six consecutive appearances out of the bullpen, mostly in his role as San Francisco's long reliever. Petit replaced struggling right-hander Tim Lincecum for the start against the Rockies.
