The Dallas Cowboys are off to a surprising 3-1 start this season thanks to a new offense that is focused on quarterback Tony Romo having the ball in his hands as little as possible.
After last seasons disappointing finish, we obviously knew we had to make some changes, said head coach Jason Garrett. So we spent a lot of time breaking down film from our games. And we discovered that we would be far more successful if someone other than Tony Romo had the football in his hands.
The new strategy, which the team is calling the hand-off, features Romo receiving the snap and then immediately handing it off to talented running back DeMarco Murray who then proceeds to run the ball down the field and not throw an interception.
I just wish we had thought of this before, said Garrett. DeMarco hasnt hurled the ball into triple-coverage even one time late in a game. Its been fantastic.
Romo said he simply wants to win.
Ill be part of any offense that wins games, said the quarterback. The other idea for our offense this year, if this new hand-off didnt work, was to duck tape me to the bench and just play with 10 guys on offense. I would have been good with that, too, if it worked. We still may run some of that later in the season.

(29,322 posts)Tony Romo is one of those quarterbacks where perception isn't reality which is easy to prove. He ranks among the all-time best in any stat that isn't a volume a volume stat. YPA, N/YPA, A/YPA, and passer rating. This year, aside from forcing the ball to Dez Bryant on a couple of throws he is back in the top 10 in key categories and they need him against St. Louis.
A misplaced reputation based on mistakes he made in games they wouldn't have had a chance if it wasn't for him in the place but he comes through. He is up here among the active leaders in comebacks but has done it in fewer opportunities than the 3 ahead of them, Roesthlisbeger, ELi, & Drew Brees. He has also thrown fewer interceptions while trailing than they have (interception rates go up for QBs that trial).
Looks at Cowboys defensive yards allowed numbers during his tenure. If Arizona had Romo has QB in recent years they could have easily been contenders. They've had a top flight D since Russell Wilson entered the league, always had solid receivers, pieces in place. Just never really a QB. Palmer is pretty good though, he makes up for his mistakes by getting the ball downfield.
