White Sox great Minnie Minoso found dead in car

Minnie Minoso, Chicago’s first black major league baseball player who became one of the White Sox’s greatest stars, died Sunday morning.

Minoso was found unresponsive in the driver's seat of a car near a gas station in the 2800 block of North Ashland Avenue around 1 a.m., according to police. There were no signs of trauma and Minoso was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:09 a.m., police said.

Chicago police said they were conducting a death investigation, as is routine. An autopsy will be performed. -more at link-

Rest Peacefully Minnie

although I don't remember it.

My dad, who passed this last year, used to tell me stories of taking me to Comiskey when I was three and four years old...1959 and 1960, before we moved from Chicago. He would tell me about getting me all wound up yelling for Minnie (could only have been in 1960) and Nellie Fox and amusing the hell out of those around us in the stands with my toddler fan-hood.

What I remember is being convinced that somehow the pitcher had managed to cadge the toy out of my Cracker Jack box...

Shockingly, my dad turned treasonous and became a Cubs backer over the years. I've always remained a Southside loyalist, even living in Milwaukee for 30 years.
