Bush, 30, leads active running backs in career receptions (466) and has had seven 40-catch seasons in his nine-year career. Last year, he was limited by back and ankle injuries with the Lions and played in 11 games, his fewest since 2010. He had 40 catches for 253 yards and added 297 rushing yards on 76 carries (3.9).
In 2013, the No. 2 pick in the 2006 draft had 1,006 rushing yards, averaged 4.5 yards a carry and ranked eighth in the NFL in yards from scrimmage (1,512). Bush averaged 1,026 rushing yards and 44 catches per season from 2011-13.
The 49ers are looking to shore up their backfield after Frank Gore, their career rushing leader who hasnt missed a game since 2010, signed with the Colts on Tuesday. Carlos Hyde, a 2014 second-round pick, is expected to assume lead-back duties. Kendall Hunter, who has played in just 16 of the 49ers last 37 games because of a torn Achilles and torn ACL, is second on the depth chart.
During the four-season Jim Harbaugh era, the 49ers rarely threw screen passes. Gore averaged 18 receptions the past four seasons, after averaging 49 catches per season from 2006-10. Last year, 49ers running backs had 26 catches, 41 fewer than they collected in 2010.
Too bad Frank left. The preseason would have been Bush v. Gore!
