2015 Horse Racing - HOF Trainer H. Allen Jerkens has passed away....

A grievous loss for the sport. The Chief was a wonderful human being who gave everyone a chance, played by the rules and did right by his horses. He was nicknamed "The Giant Killer" because of his ability to take modestly bred horses and beat some of the sports biggest runners. In 1973 he beat TC winner Secretariat twice with two different horses, Onion and Prove Out. My favorite horse that he trained was Triple Tiara winning Sky Beauty.

RIP, Chief.

I caught Onion one day in a claiming race at Suffolk Downs some years later. I remember looking down at the program and thinking, "wasn't that the horse that beat Secretariat years ago", and is now on the lowly claiming circuit?
