Rose / Fosse / ASG: What would happen today?

It happened 45 years ago this month. In fact, it’ll be 45 years to the day on Tuesday when the All-Star Game is played in Cincinnati, where it also was played in 1970.

SNIP

Rose barreling around third on Jim Hickman’s single to center. Leo Durocher frantically waving Rose home. Fosse moving up the line to position himself for Amos Otis’ throw. Rose lowering his left shoulder and plowing into Fosse. Fosse tumbling backward and winding up crouched over on his knees. Rose being congratulated by on-deck hitter Dick Dietz and others for scoring the winning run.

SNIP

So if it happened today? Two significant factors to consider: the rule change on home-plate collisions and the difference in treating injuries.

In Fosse’s day, catchers were vulnerable, easy targets for runners to knock over. It came with the territory — up until last year when baseball adopted Rule 7.13, designed to curtail home-plate collisions by giving runners a path to the plate and forbidding catchers from blocking the plate without the ball.

Everytime I find myself feeling for Rose I'm reminded of this douchebag play.

There is absolutely nothing douchbaggy about that play. You block the plate you invite a shoulder. That was the way rose played and a hell of alot of other players played just like that.. Marichal hitting Roseboro with a bat. If you remember when The Twin's dan Gladden came in spikes high on Greg Olson in the '92 series against the Braves. Well McCarver said Roseboro would have caught that leg and broke it in 2. That was how the game was played at the time. Frank Robinson was no shrinking violet either.

there was no interleague play and it was the national against the American for bragging rights. Furthermore, i listened to Torre today on Colin Cowherd and he talked about Rose. He said rose was a player of average talent who through force and determination made himself an extraordinary player. This is how he did it.

Finally, look at the box scores back then. Pitchers pitched 3 innings and starters played at least 5 innings. Willie Mays led off for the national league. You must not be old enough to remember how competitive the All Star game was.
One year Hal McRae made the all star team for the American league and all the Reds could say at pregame was he couldn't even start for us.

get run over and if you remember Scoscia he would get the ball and launch himself at the runner and stop the runner cold.you.

Drysdale and Gibson through at you.

Sal Maglie was called the barber. Do you know why? He practically clipped your ears with his curveball.

Ty Cobb- spikes up

learn some history of the game.
