(16,113 posts)They had to get rid of him to dump Crawford and Beckett or the Dodgers wouldn't have touched that trade. They've definitely had some bad, big contract, free agent signings, though.

Legend has it that a baseball player named Bateman came to spring training so overweight he was fined one hundred dollars per pound per day.
On the other hand, it's not a terrible idea to go into camp a bit overweight and playing your way into shape if it keeps you from peaking physically too early in the season. Cleon Jones of the Mets did that in 1969 and had a championship year. But he didn't come in gut-shaking overweight...
