Patrick Downes said at some points along the way he wasn’t sure he would make it, but he was buoyed by the cheering crowds as as he made his way on his running blade down the Boston Marathon course on Monday.

“You don’t have it in the bag until the finish line is in sight. But the crowds kept yelling,” he told WBZ-TV.

At the finish line, he was met by his wife, Jessica Kensky. Downes and Kensky were injured in the bombings as they cheered runners at the finish line in 2013. Both lost lower legs and faced difficult recoveries.

Downes spoke to the Globe recently about his decision to participate in the Marathon. At first, he didn’t want to run without Kensky, who had a second amputation last year and has continued to face setbacks and additional surgeries.
