Oh well, it takes their minds off the cheating baseball team!

By my count, that's EIGHT years. One of which he had to sit out completely as a result of his own behavior.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)One year on suspension, not injured. Would the fins have liked him to play that year? You bet. And he would have if not for some "character issues". The kind of issues this whole thread is about.

(41,692 posts)The guy smoked weed. He didn't murder anyone or cheat .
hughee99
(16,113 posts)He didn't lose a season for his first offense, or his second offense. He wasn't unaware of what the possible consequences of smoking weed are. No one "slipped" pot into his system without his knowledge. Look I don't care about weed at all, and I'd be fine if the NFL stopped caring about it too, but if you tell a player not once, not twice but MANY MANY times that if they keep doing it they'll get suspended and they keep doing it anyway, you can't blame ANYONE else for it. It's the player's fault, and their inability or unwillingness to stop doing it despite the consequences is absolutely a character issue.
Williams would have played a lot more games, ran for a lot more yards, and helped the Dolphins to more wins if not for his "love of the leaf".
trumad
(41,692 posts)That was an NFL record. Dave Wannatedt ran the guy into the ground because that is all Wannstedt had.
No...Ricky Williams fucking quit the first time because he was battered and had nothing left in the tank.
yoi really don't know what the fuck you are talking about.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)He was on their roster for EIGHT fucking seasons. After the first two seasons were he was run into the ground, no doubt, he was on Miami's roster for 6 MORE seasons. Are you really suggesting that one of the best backs ever has "nothing left in the tank" after his first 5 seasons in the NFL, but went on to play for your team for 5 more seasons (also one suspended season and one year off) anyway?
That seems like an awfully short career, if you only count his first 5 seasons, for one of the "best backs ever".
trumad
(41,692 posts)Are you saying Williams lacked character?
hughee99
(16,113 posts)The kind of personality issues that would give most GM's some cause for concern on draft day. Every team has guys like this. I'm not trying to imply that there was something more wrong with Williams than many other players, but if a player knows they can't do something or they'll get suspended, are told this over and over and do it anyway, I don't see how it can't be considered a character issue.
JonLP24
(29,322 posts)Try running into big tackles, ends, and linebackers 300+ carries. Most backs break down, injured, and fall apart. Taking the break was much needed.
As far as character issues he was probably one of the more easy to get along with guys in the NFL

(64,933 posts)Why are we persecuting people for using pot, when Johhny Football can go out and get hammered on booze.
Now if we are talking about PEDS and the ROID Sox, that's a different matter. That is CHEATING.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)If you get caught smoking it, the nfl suspends you. Maybe they shouldn't, but they do. When your team loses a star player for a pot suspension, are you okay with it?

(16,113 posts)Signing "low character" free agents. I bow to your expertise on glass houses.
trumad
(41,692 posts)Take a poll and ask what NFL team is considered the cheatingest team.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)Also, I don't think the "cheatingest team" is determined by popular vote. All teams have signed players of questionable character, and all teams have had cheating scandals going back decades. Is your issue really the cheating? I'm starting to think your issue isn't the cheating or you'd be a little more upset when other teams do it.
They have just as many glass houses in New England as they do in Florida.

(16,113 posts)I'll concede that if polled HERE the Patriots would win an a landslide.
I have a question for you though. As our local holy crusader for sports virtue and one of our only very small number of Marlins fans, I was fascinated by your thread on Dee Gordon.
Sorry, I see you've been busy with other things and didn't make one. Dee Gordon is the guy from the Marlins that got bagged 80 games for steroids. Now I don't expect everyone that disapproves of cheating to post ever time someone gets caught, but as someone who takes such issue with it and the almost the only person here who shows any interest in the Marlins, I thought for sure this would have been the topic of one of your many, many OPs. Okay, fair enough. But surely you felt compelled to chime in in the post that's already there, right? No, I guess not.
In any case, that's for making my point that cheating is only important to you SOMETIMES (when it's the Patriots).
trumad
(41,692 posts)I see Ortiz had a warm and fuzzy story about some sick kid this last week. I wonder if he knows his hero is a cheater as well.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)You spend a lot of time on the sports forum discussing the scourge of cheating, but it's only actuall important to you when it's a team you dislike. I haven't, and probably wouldn't, have commented on the Gordon thing at all, except that it provided me the opportunity to highlight your hypocrisy. Sorry, the price you have to pay for constantly calling out other teams cheating is that you don't get to slink when your own team gets caught.
I love smacking around Boston fans. So much fucking fun.

I think the Pats should try harder to get the same high quality human beings the Dolphins have been signing for years.

trumad
(41,692 posts)Well there you go.
hughee99
(16,113 posts)I understand why. All of the teams do. If NFL teams started dropping people with personality or character issues, there's be at least a 30% turnover on all the NFL rosters.
