He didn't lose a season for his first offense, or his second offense. He wasn't unaware of what the possible consequences of smoking weed are. No one "slipped" pot into his system without his knowledge. Look I don't care about weed at all, and I'd be fine if the NFL stopped caring about it too, but if you tell a player not once, not twice but MANY MANY times that if they keep doing it they'll get suspended and they keep doing it anyway, you can't blame ANYONE else for it. It's the player's fault, and their inability or unwillingness to stop doing it despite the consequences is absolutely a character issue.

Williams would have played a lot more games, ran for a lot more yards, and helped the Dolphins to more wins if not for his "love of the leaf".

He was on their roster for EIGHT fucking seasons. After the first two seasons were he was run into the ground, no doubt, he was on Miami's roster for 6 MORE seasons. Are you really suggesting that one of the best backs ever has "nothing left in the tank" after his first 5 seasons in the NFL, but went on to play for your team for 5 more seasons (also one suspended season and one year off) anyway?

That seems like an awfully short career, if you only count his first 5 seasons, for one of the "best backs ever".

The kind of personality issues that would give most GM's some cause for concern on draft day. Every team has guys like this. I'm not trying to imply that there was something more wrong with Williams than many other players, but if a player knows they can't do something or they'll get suspended, are told this over and over and do it anyway, I don't see how it can't be considered a character issue.

Try running into big tackles, ends, and linebackers 300+ carries. Most backs break down, injured, and fall apart. Taking the break was much needed.

As far as character issues he was probably one of the more easy to get along with guys in the NFL

Also, I don't think the "cheatingest team" is determined by popular vote. All teams have signed players of questionable character, and all teams have had cheating scandals going back decades. Is your issue really the cheating? I'm starting to think your issue isn't the cheating or you'd be a little more upset when other teams do it.

They have just as many glass houses in New England as they do in Florida.

I'll concede that if polled HERE the Patriots would win an a landslide.

I have a question for you though. As our local holy crusader for sports virtue and one of our only very small number of Marlins fans, I was fascinated by your thread on Dee Gordon.

Sorry, I see you've been busy with other things and didn't make one. Dee Gordon is the guy from the Marlins that got bagged 80 games for steroids. Now I don't expect everyone that disapproves of cheating to post ever time someone gets caught, but as someone who takes such issue with it and the almost the only person here who shows any interest in the Marlins, I thought for sure this would have been the topic of one of your many, many OPs. Okay, fair enough. But surely you felt compelled to chime in in the post that's already there, right? No, I guess not.

In any case, that's for making my point that cheating is only important to you SOMETIMES (when it's the Patriots).

You spend a lot of time on the sports forum discussing the scourge of cheating, but it's only actuall important to you when it's a team you dislike. I haven't, and probably wouldn't, have commented on the Gordon thing at all, except that it provided me the opportunity to highlight your hypocrisy. Sorry, the price you have to pay for constantly calling out other teams cheating is that you don't get to slink when your own team gets caught.

It's a wonder Lawrence Phillips, Cecil Collins, and Ritchie Incognito never played for them. Not even Phillip Merling who was arrested for aggravated battery against his pregnant girlfriend.

I think the Pats should try harder to get the same high quality human beings the Dolphins have been signing for years.
