The quarterback situation in San Francisco might have just taken an interesting twist: Apparently, Chip Kelly is reportedly ready to give Colin Kaepernick a chance at the starting job.
Early on Friday, CBSSports.com NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported that frustration with Kelly's offense was mounting in the 49ers' locker room after the team's Thursday night loss to the Cardinals.
Before the season started, it was believed that one of the reasons that the 49ers were hesitant to play Kaepernick is because his contract is guaranteed for injury. Basically, if Kaepernick got hurt while playing in a game this year, his contract for 2017 would become guaranteed.
However, it seems that problem might soon be solved. La Canora has reported that Kaepernick and the 49ers have agreed to restructure his contract, which currently runs through the 2020 season.

(36,463 posts)To Hell with Kaepernick and Gabbert, I liked what I saw in Ponder during preseason play. Plus he's a players player, and that just might just be the glue needed to fix this miserable team.

(9,527 posts)He's not a very good NFL coach. His offense isn't good enough to overcome average talent and the pace he was supposed to set doesn't work nearly as well at the NFL level where every team has the best players from the best colleges instead of playing random gimme games like half the college schedule.

(9,527 posts)If they are insisting on restructuring his contract around the injury guarantee, the competition for starting QB wasn't actually a competition.
The GM isn't good and the ownership situation sucks, but neither of them are why Kaepernick can't read the field and Chip Kelly has fallen off a cliff after his first year in Philadelphia.

(31,186 posts)He put a lot of effort into improving reads and playmaking during the offseason two years ago but, according to Kurt Warner (who worked with him), neglected mechanics, especially footwork. Add that to a weak O-line and puppet headcoach (Jim Tomsula) last year, plus his injury, and it was a recipe for disaster.
Maybe Kaep has addressed those mechanics. But yeah, the 49ers have huge problems. Trent Baalke's drafts have not produced many playmakers and the roster is thin. Chip Kelly apparently is not headcoaching material. The new stadium sucks. So does ownership.

(29,322 posts)Jeremy Kerley is solid but I think the same year following that offseason the 49ers lead the league in drops, they let go of Crabtree who is having a monster season for Oakland.
The 49ers are in desperate need of receive r depth.
