He's a serve and volleyer. Clay slows down his shots and he really doesn't have a game to slug it out.

John can't compete with the people who are best on clay because he's not fast and agile enough, either for the baseline rallies or to come to the net. But the point is that he himself noted he likes it/plays on it better than you would expect for someone with that good of a serve.
