First Italian ever, Francesco Molinari, just won the British Open. No surprise here, he's been the best player in the world recently.

(64,951 posts). . . italians would say "Fa bene". A much simpler way to say the same thing.
Most of my italian is from the far south and sicily, but i've spent some time in Milan and Florence and they say that there too.

(1,384 posts)Officially, it's THE Open Championship, there are other open tournaments in many sports, then again there is only one, THE Open,

(64,951 posts)I looked that up this weekend. It was called the Open Championship when it started. The R&A themselves changed it to the British Open 4 or 5 years after the best players in the world started going to the US to play in the US Open. (Think Vardon and Ray in the open won by Ouimet.)
The reversion to the name "The Open Championship" started only a few years.
It's pompous nonsense, as the "THE" Ohio State University.
The PGA tour still refers to it as the British Open in their official stats.

(1,384 posts)as the the Royal and Ancient Golf Club has always called it the Open.
It's called the Open in 2018. No one refers to it as the British Open, despite your claim.

(64,951 posts)The R&A started marketing in the US as "The Open Championship" in 2012.
They can call it what they want over there, but their television partners called it the British Open, and the radio and print folks, all the way back to Bobby Jones, referenced it as the British Open.
You do understand the the TV people are PARTNERS. They didn't object to any coverage carrier calling the British Open until they made a marketing change in 2012.

(1,384 posts)In fact the are expressly forbidden from doing so. I mean it in the contractual obligation between the R&A & broadcasters.
It's trivial, I did post a wink after my original post, it seems no one really cares, well maybe you do and the members of the R&A.

(1,384 posts)It's certainly not I. Do you know what this means? , look it up one day, then review my original post.
Open Championship organizers don't want anybody calling it 'The British Open' anymore and it is causing more confusion than ever
