TOPEKA, Kansas The Kansas City Chiefs put out a request for proposals to design a new stadium on the Kansas side of the state line and are negotiating for land near the Kansas Speedway, according to two reports from Kansas City area talk show hosts.
Pete Mundo of KCMO talk radio broke the news that the Chiefs contacted multiple firms regarding a new stadium to be built at Interstate 435 and Interstate 70. He said the news was confirmed by several sources.
Mundo stressed that the RFP didnt mean the Chiefs had selected Kansas as the location for a new stadium and added that his gut said they would stay in Missouri.
On Monday, Kevin Kietzman said on his podcast that the Chiefs are in negotiations with NASCAR and the state of Kansas to acquire land just west of the Kansas Speedway. He said the Chiefs also may be building a hotel by the Hollywood Casino and creating an entertainment district.

(17,243 posts)County executive (he got voted out or basically fired from his office in September) didnt care if the Royals or Chiefs stayed in the KCMO and Jackson County. One of the many reasons he got voted out/fired. Now our republican governor is suggesting putting a retractable roof over the current stadium. Dont know how that would work on an old stadium though. Too little to late governor and Jackson County.

(29,794 posts)Don't be surprised if they bring out the relocation threats.
If there is one area where Congress should get involved with sports is to prevent pro sports leagues from constantly replacing good enough stadiums & arenas and get sweetheart deals to build new ones from taxpayers. They could easily fund their own stadiums but they don't have to because of the leverage the leagues have--even the historic franchises would relocate if they didn't get a new stadium/arena deal to their liking.
In other contexts it would likely be an antitrust violation but I'm rusty on my economics of sports. I highly recommend the website https://www.fieldofschemes.com/ for news and updates on stadium deals from the perspective of a sports economist.
