I went to a talk sponsored by our local Audubon soc. tonite.

about birds flying into windows.

It's a huge problem only overshadowed by cat attacks on birds.
Between the two, we've lost billions of birds since we started counting

The good news is that most birds can see UV and that, added to other tricks, can reduce bird deaths.

Cats we can't do much about.

Either way, though, windmills, it seems, kill very few birds-- another Trump lie hits the dirt.

Black cherry seedling transplants with original rootball from pasture

Hickory, same. Very challenging

Walnut seeds and the occasional transplant

White pine seedlings

oak seedlings

norway maples

Siberian elm volunteers

occasionally, an American elm would volunteer
The above mix was for new tree lines along the highway and on north side of farmhouse. 3 rows on average.

In mowed areas, a couple hybrid poplars , corkscrew willow and silver maples

The trees give the birds a place to hide. Not a lot of bird hits.

Dogs kept the wild cats away.

Owls would arrive at night.

if people would keep their pets inside. I know folks will pitch a fit about that but domestic cats are essentially vaccinated predators. They are hell on songbirds. I’ve had cats my whole life…Ive kept them inside because it’s best for them. They don’t get their asses kicked by neighborhood cats, they don’t kill hundreds of songbirds in their lifetimes and the raccoons, foxes and coyotes that live in my neighborhood can’t eat them. Outdoor cats kill billions of songbirds a year. They are not a natural part of the ecosystems.
