The cars simply overpowered the roads, and the sport was'nt ready

Never mind that Portugese rally fans stand IN the road to wait for the cars, 'cuz you can see better from there - so, to win in Portugal, you drive full bore at the densest part of the crowd, 'cuz that's where the road is.
