Lake trout removal hits record high 300,000 from Yellowstone Lake

The final count for lake trout netted and removed from
Yellowstone Lake this year topped 300,000 — a record high.

That brought the total number of the nonnative fish removed
from the lake to more than 1.1 million since they were first discovered in 1994.

The lake trout's introduction has severely reduced the number
of native Yellowstone cutthroat trout in what was once the
fish's stronghold. Whirling disease and drought have also cut cutthroat numbers.

This year, fisheries biologists have noted an increase in the number of
juvenile cutthroat trout, possibly signaling a tentative rebound.

I love those wildlife rebound stories and I love when they are happening in Yellowstone.

were introduced into rivers and now threaten the native Guadalupe Bass. Difficult to undo damage.
