Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer expected to veto 'religious freedom' bill

By Dana Bash, CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent
updated 3:00 PM EST, Tue February 25, 2014

(CNN) -- All signs indicate Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer will likely veto politically-charged legislation that supporters say promotes religious freedom and opponents contend discriminates against gays and lesbians.

Brewer did not signal her intention either way in an exclusive interview with CNN on Monday at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington.

"I can assure you, as always, I will do the right thing for the state of Arizona," she said.

But some Arizona Republicans who know her well say they are confident those comments mean Brewer will almost surely reject the bill that is generating nationwide controversy.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Then when the damn state suffers economic backlash and the wrath that will surely follow, that whole goddamned bunch of teabagger bigots that supported this legislation will have to back pedal like crazy and forever be seen as the brainless scum that they really are.

Seeing them have to repeal the new law will be a real treat.

The broke it - they bought it.

If Brewer does veto it, it will be the result of pure political calculation.

The gov is feeling the pressure, and if that causes her to do the right thing, I'm fine with it, and see this as a demonstration of checks and balances.

8. John Kerry Says Arizona's Anti-Gay Law Is On Uganda's Level

Secretary of State John Kerry said that a new bill pending in Arizona that would permit segregation against LGBT people based on one's religious beliefs is comparable to a collection of harsh anti-LGBT laws in Uganda because both are "contrary to fundamental basic human rights."

Kerry made the comments Wednesday in an interview with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. His comments are perhaps the most direct comments from a top-ranking Obama administration official on Arizona's SB 1062 bill. Gov. Jan Brewer (R) is mulling whether to veto the bill before the Saturday deadline, when the bill will become law if she does nothing.

Mitchell asked, "You have an anti-homosexual law Uganda. And now Arizona is looking into whether it will allow gays and lesbians into restaurants. Doesn't this show other countries how we feel about homosexuality in our states?"

Kerry responded that he was "counting on" Brewer to make the right decision on the bill.
