I gave up on mixed sites over 10 years ago although I helped moderate a mixed chat on IRC until 8 years ago when I got my transplant and was too blind to cope.

There were instances of Republicans tracking lefties down and threatening their jobs. There was even a lawsuit filed against one of them--and won by the plaintiff. The rank and file just have never been particularly civilized to the point of having a set of basic manners.

I like the type of discussions that happen when the mean, petty and spiteful Republicans are eliminated. Rational Republicans who are able to discuss things are out there and I count a few as friends, but they've been left in the minority.

DU is home. I will rarely visit Discussionist and only when I have been directed to an interesting discussion.

Everyone else just gave up. Or left for easier debates.

Sometimes silence from the other side - just means that you have just won. The other side has simply been silenced.

You've got to get used to success; silence at last from the other side is one key sign of it.

Next? Take on the conservatives on their own turf? "Discussionist" blog.

When trolling Prof. Emeritus (Univ. of Edinburgh) Larry Hurtado's blog. Dr. Hurtado banned him for logorrhea and his cockamamie exegeses as, I'm sure, have others. DU and Discussionist are probably the last places left that allow him to post. (Amazing what Google can do with a few simple keystrokes.)

I always consider nonbelievers posting in the believers group rather ridiculous and inappropriate.
Some believe that because believers don't wish to engage with them that they have "won".

What have they won?
I guess they think they have won the "argument", but have they?
Have you heard of any believers becoming non-believers because of postings on DU?
Has anyone noticed a decline in church attendance or even religiosity because of postings on DU?

Muslims and Christians tend to be rather authoritarian about imposing their beliefs on unbelievers. Additionally, I truly believe that if the majority of the world's population would abandon supernatural superstition in favor of rational problem solving, our world would be much improved.

Soprano to high baritone vs. bass baritone to basso profundo.

I was out on a ranch birding with a city guy one time, and the coyotes started up a chorus in the middle of the afternoon. His eyes practically popped, and he muttered, "My God, it sounds like Jurassic Park out here.!"

He told me that they just never saw wildlife of any sort in the city back home. To them, actual live squirrels running around on the grass and climbing trees was almost as exotic and exciting as seeing an elephant or lion on an African tour would be for an American.

This is not a safe haven for believers, it's a group for the discussion of religion - and for some obsessive members, atheism.

What is obsessive is non-stamp collectors persistently talking about stamp collecting. Particularly when they repeatedly echo each other.

When we live in a nation where people don't live and die based on the state of the stamp collecting, you'll have a point. Until then, your position on it is willfully ignorant. And, unless you're actually stupid, the ignorant part is unconvincing. I think you know better, but just like to be a dick about it. I could be wrong, though. It could be the other option.

The believers' group would be the Interfaith group, or one of the various forums for specific religions/ denominations.

And no, I don't expect to 'convert' any believer into non-belief, any more than I expect to be converted to Christianity by the believers.

years of Catholic education leaves its mark as much as the color of skin you were born with. So although I agree with many that the Catholic Church has been guilty of marginalizing women and gays, it doesn't mean I can accept the Catholic bashing that goes on. My Irish husband would be the first to point out the persecution the Irish went through for hundreds of years just because they clung to their Catholic faith.

I try to respect all religions and the people who believe in them and who attend church to try to be better people although I can find fault in all of them. I hope others will try to respect Catholics too in the same way.

I personally do not worship in any church or temple because I find that a hike in the wilderness gives me all the spiritual uplifting that I need.
