Pat Robertson tells mother: Your son’s stomach pains are caused by a witch ancestor

Televangelist Pat Robertson advised a mother on Monday that she could cure her son’s stomach pains by finding someone to cast out demons that were possibly caused by an ancestor who practiced witchcraft.

In an email, a viewer named Dianne told the TV preacher that her son had “painful shock-waves thru his body” that originated in his stomach while she was praying for him and calling on “the name of JESUS.”

“My son said it felt like something hit him very hard in the stomach,” the mother wrote. “I know this is not of God. He is a Christian. Can Christians be attacked by demons?”

Instead of recommending that the mother seek medical attention, Robertson said that the boy could be “oppressed or possessed by demons.”

this child's stomach problem through the agency of exorcising the demon that the witch ancestor has inflicted on this child. Since this person is SO VERY SMART, it is best if we just believe. Gods work in mysterious ways. What would Asclepius do?

his father was a viciously RW and racist senator from Virginia.

Seriously, this sort of crap could be really dangerous. If your kid is ill, take them to the doctor, not to Pat Robertson.

To me, such proclamations are equally absurd and ignorant. YMMV.

When it was hurting, the only relief was laying in the fetal position, and that offered only moderate relief.

The mere fact that ANYONE would contact Pat Fucking Robertson for medical advice is indicative of the failure of the American education system.

11. People wanting spiritual remedies should use a "both and" strategy.

Seek spiritual intervention AND standard medical treatment, not instead of standard medical treatment. That way, whether the spiritual means work or not, you're in no worse off a position.

Also, people should only seek spiritual remedies that haven't proven to be harmful. So if the spiritual remedy in question is an exorcism method that is likely to cause its own physical or psychological harm, that's out.
