Organised religion is a threat to human rights, according to controversial campaigner Peter Tatchell speaking at an event in Plymouth.
Mr Tatchell, who has spoken in Plymouth in the past and has credited the city for its work in the fight for equality, focused his talk at Devonport Guildhall on organised religion last night.
His talk about Humanism around the world explained his view that organised religion promotes sexist and homophobic discrimination in law, and seeks to prevent equality and human rights.
He said: Humanist schools mean young people are given a grounded understanding of different belief systems, and Ugandan Humanist schools are producing a generation of young people with an open mind not based on superstition or dogma.

(7,753 posts)3. Peter Tatchell is only "controversial" because he's gay and has always campaigned for rights
for gay people and others. Always had great respect for him. He's someone the Daily Hate Mail would always consider "controversial".
Plus, of course, he's quite correct.
