South Korea Approves Christmas Tree On Border With Atheist North Korea

Children and Christians sing during a lighting ceremony of Christmas tree at Seoul City Hall Plaza, South Korea, on 29 November

South Korea has approved a Christian group’s plans to set up a large, illuminated Christmas tree near the border with North Korea.

But while under normal circumstances it would appear to be an entirely innocent gesture, the move is certain to spark fury in Pyongyang.

South Korea dismantled a 43-year-old frontline Christmas tree-shaped tower in October because of safety worries.

The structure stoked tensions because officially atheist Pyongyang saw it as propaganda warfare.

Maybe they should just do a billboard.

12. "...saw it as propaganda warfare". Warfare? Perhaps. Proaganda? Most definitely.

Propaganda is a form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population toward some cause or position

Propaganda is information that is not impartial and used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively (thus possibly lying by omission) to encourage a particular synthesis, or using loaded messages to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. Propaganda can be used as a form of ideological or commercial warfare.
