Pope Francis may be a kinder, gentler pope that his right-wing predecessor Pope Benedict, but he is neither kind nor gentle in his opinion of transgender people.

A new book by the pontiff, Pope Francis: This Economy Kills, makes it clear that in Pope Francis' way of thinking, "love thy neighbor" does not extend to people who feel they were born the wrong gender. He went so far as to compare transitioning people to nuclear weapons.

"Let's think of the nuclear arms, of the possibility to annihilate in a few instants a very high number of human beings, the pope writes. "Let's think also of genetic manipulation, of the manipulation of life, or of the gender theory, that does not recognize the order of creation."

Gay Star News reports that the pope even resorted to very some very unpope-like name calling, branding transgender people as "Herods," presumably after the King of Judea who sent his soldiers to murder all baby boys in hopes of killing the infant Jesus. Pope Francis complains that transgender people are "Herods" who "manipulate their bodies" and "disfigure the face of man and woman, destroying creation."
