Secular scholar in India shot to death

NEW DELHI — Writers and intellectuals took to the streets in protest Monday in the southern Indian state of Karnataka over the shooting death of prominent secular intellectual Malleshappa Madivalappa Kalburgi, the third such killing in India since 2013.

Police said that Kalburgi was shot at point-blank range Sunday morning when he answered the door of his home in Dharwad, a quiet town about 260 miles from the state’s capital of Bangalore. Kalburgi was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Kalburgi, 77, was a former university vice chancellor and noted scholar of literature in the Kannada language. Over the years, he had angered right-wing Hindu groups and some within his own caste community, a Hindu sect called Lingayat, with controversial views on idol worship and religious rituals.
