Sexual intimacy and sexual pleasure are two of humanitys most cherished experiences. A recent study showed that sex makes people even happier than religion does. The Church knows that. It also knows that forbidding something we cravemaking it taboocan make the craving even stronger. Its the perfect set-up for an institution trafficking in guilt and redemption.

1. Sex is for procreation, which means sex for mere pleasure is bad and safeguarding against ill-conceived pregnancy makes you cheap. If you dont want a baby in nine months you should keep your legs together or your zipper up.
Much more at link.
Catholic pro-life theologian Monica Miller recently earned herself a Facebook meme when she said that Planned Parenthood should get no federal funding because the kind of sexual ethic that Planned Parenthood promotes is sex for recreation, sex for mere pleasure. If Miller spent more time studying biology instead of theology, she might not have made herself a laughingstock. Research shows that sex for mere pleasure improves mental and physical health, strengthens pair bonds and eases conflicts between partners, and it does so in a wide variety of species, not just humans.

(5,614 posts)When I was a boy in Catholic school
we were taught that masturbation was a first class ticket to hell.
Created a quandary for me. I could either go to Confession and confess my sins AND make a sincere resolution to go and sin no more OR I could face the fact that I fully intended to keep on keeping on no matter what I said to the priest on the other side of the magic curtain.
The problem was that God, being omnipotent and omniscient, had to know I was lying. I mean, I knew I was lying. How could Jesus not know that? So, I could go to Confession and not confess my evil, sexual solitary practices (and yes, there was no involvement with procreation unfortunately) or I could lie to Jesus.
Solution? Since I wasn't about to stop masturbating (I doubt any boy could in truth) I simply stopped going to confession. Worked out fine for me.
As to eternal damnation? Well, later on in life I fathered two wonderful human beings and came to realize that I certainly could not damn them to hell, no matter what they might do. Since I am made in the image and likeness of God (btw, did Jesus ever masturbate?) I have to figure the Big Guy probably felt the same about His kids. Ergo, no hell.
Now, of course, as I close in on my Final Days I have absolutely no fear of what awaits me after I punch out for the last time. Either there is absolutely nothing afterwards, which won't bother me since I won't know, OR it'll be like being a kid again at the Circus with unicorns and magic sparkles...
Ooops, sorry. Falling back into politics...

Meanwhile, she's occupying her time with dubious new age psychology and transhumanism.

(49,533 posts)There must be another reason every priest, bishop, and even the pope keep spouting them!
Granted, Catholics aren't the ONLY Christians, or certainly the only religious folk, who accept a lot of this nonsense, but hey, it wasn't my piece.
