Bernie Sanders Meets Pope Francis During Visit to Vatican City

APR 16 2016, 7:48 AM ET
by ANNE THOMPSON, NICK BAILEY and F. BRINLEY BRUTON

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders met with Pope Francis in the Vatican on Saturday, calling the short visit an "honor and a joy."

"Today certainly was the highlight of the trip," Sanders told NBC News of his 6 a.m. (midnight ET) meeting with the pontiff outside the papal residence's breakfast room.

He called the pope "one of the great leaders in this world."

"In terms of economic justice, the need to combat climate change — nobody in the world has been more profound and articulate than the pope, and I'm delighted to go forward with him on those issues," said Sanders, who has made wealth inequality a cornerstone of his campaign.

1. "I hope the Pope talked to him about guns."

That was my wife's initial reaction upon hearing the news.

She's a practicing Roman Catholic.

It seems that Idolatry (of several forms) has become an issue in this presidential campaign.

As Christians committed to a more just and peaceful world we are called to take a clear stand for creative and active nonviolence and against all forms of violence.

. . . .

We propose that the Catholic Church develop and consider shifting to a Just Peace approach based on Gospel nonviolence. A Just Peace approach offers a vision and an ethic to build peace as well as to prevent, defuse, and to heal the damage of violent conflict. This ethic includes a commitment to human dignity and thriving relationships, with specific criteria, virtues, and practices to guide our actions. We recognize that peace requires justice and justice requires peacemaking.

..."Just War" always struck me as an oxymoron.

Replacing this bit of antiquated theology with "Just Peace" would be a true advance forward, indeed!

The author of the article you posted is well acquainted with the struggles for justice and peace both within the church and without.

In the battle of Church v State, my unsolicited advise to those on the side of State is, don't mess with the guy who literally wrote the book on Oscar Romero.

I hadn't even noticed he wrote the article. Thanks for the reminder.

BTW, the blame goes all the way back to Augustine.

She didn't mention anything about the length of the meeting, so I can't comment on that.

I heard the news on the internet earlier.

I'm not sure what else they said about it on TV, but the TV report was the first that she had heard of the meeting.

Some of us live on the internet. Some of us don't.

Your obsession with guns is really kinda disturbing.

I haven't even mentioned my own opinion on the matter, so I'm not sure what you are referring to, here.

Do I have an opinion about guns, separate from the opinion that I reported from my wife on the Papal meeting with Bernie, that you are interested in discussing?

(I do have opinions on the matter, but they might offend you, since they are rather atheist in their content. And rather militantly atheist, at that.)

Or is this intended as a comment on her opinion?

Or her saying the Bible is her favorite book? Or are you trying to score cheap points against the other team?

Or are you so wrapped up in your own duplicitous little bigotry against all things Catholic that you cannot understand what the conference is about and why he went?

Somehow, I don't think "sad" accurately describes your reaction to this meeting.

Well, I look at it as about the same thing as going on Fox News or something to get your message out there to a larger demographic.
