ATLANTA Republican Donald Trump has told conservative evangelical pastors in Florida that his presidency would preserve religious liberty and reverse what he insists is a government-enforced muzzling of Christians.
The same afternoon, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine praised another, more liberal group of black church leaders in Louisiana for their progressive values that are the values of Scripture, and he urged them to see Hillary Clinton as a kindred spirit.
The competing appearances earlier this month highlight an oft-overlooked political reality: The religious vote is vast and complex, and it extends beyond generalizations about social conservatives who side with Republicans and black Protestant churches whose pastors and parishioners opt nearly unanimously for Democrats.
Heres an overview of how the dynamics among religious voters could help determine the 45th president.

Michele Bachmann said Donald Trump longs for the time when even my Jews would say merry Christmas.
The Republican former representative spoke fondly of Trumps churched background and 1950s sensibilities, in a clip from a Saturday interview published by watchdog Right Wing Watch.
He said, When I was growing up, everyone said merry Christmas, even my Jews would say merry Christmas, Bachmann recounted Trump telling her. Its New York City, theres [sic] a lot of Jews, and they would even say merry Christmas. Why cant we even say merry Christmas anymore?

BuzzFeed highlighted an amazing exchange today in which Eric Trump, the Republican candidates son and a leading surrogate for the GOP ticket, explained some of the motivations that led his father to run for president.

Similarly, the National Christmas Tree wasnt renamed. As BuzzFeeds report explained, there was some weird, right-wing chain email a few years ago that said the word Christmas was replaced with Holiday in the official name of the tree, but in reality, that never actually happened. Some conservatives made this up, the Trumps chose to believe it.

Or he sees the tree on the White House lawn has been renamed Holiday tree instead of Christmas tree, continued Trump. I could go on and on for hours. Those are the very things that made my father run, and those are the very things he cares about.
