As the attorney general nominee, Sen. Jeff Sessions is a threat to justice, fairness and freedom. Over his 20-year career in Congress, he has repeatedly voted against immigration, equal pay and laws protecting women in the military. He supports voter ID, which leads to voter suppression among our nations most vulnerable populations and decreases their participation in the democratic process. He also supports the continued privatization of prisons, and dont ask dont tell.
A confirmation of Sessions would be disrespectful to the progress made by African-Americans, immigrants and women who fought for their rights and the rights of others. This is not a person I have confidence in to oversee the U.S. justice system. His record takes away all speculation of his ability to objectively and fairly execute the duties of the attorney general.
During his confirmation hearings, he often stated he would follow the law and uphold the law. However, I am not confident that someone who has been recognized for his work by known anti-immigrant organizations such as Numbers USA, the Center for Security Policy, and Eagle Forum is fit to lead DOJ. I am further alarmed by his close relationships with the Center for Immigration Studies and Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), groups that have been identified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center ...

... We, the undersigned group of 100 African American faith leaders, come together to urge you to vote against the confirmation of Sen. Jeff Sessions as the next U.S. attorney general. With his long and troubling history of attacks on civil rights, Sen. Sessions simply cannot be relied on to protect the rights of all Americansa critical responsibility of our nations attorney general.
While serving as a U.S. attorney in the 1980s, Sen. Sessions unsuccessfully prosecuted multiple African American voting rights advocates, including a trusted advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had worked to register rural, elderly African Americans in Alabama. With his actions, Mr. Sessions sent a chilling message to those working to ensure African Americans were able to exercise their constitutionally-protected right to vote.
When Mr. Sessions was being considered for a position as a U.S. District Court judge, a federal prosecutor testified that Sessions had agreed with a comment that a white attorney representing African American clients may be a disgrace to his race. The prosecutor also reported that Mr. Sessions had called the NAACP un-American, and a Black attorney testified that Mr. Sessions had referred to him as boy.
But our concern is aroused not only by these previous actions, but also by his current record. As a senator, Mr. Sessions voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, legislation designed to fight sexual and domestic violence, and against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a proposal to help address the gender pay gap. He applauded the 2013 Supreme Court Shelby County v. Holder decision that gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act and has since opposed efforts to modernize and restore these crucial protections against racial discrimination in voting ...
