A music teacher at Ampleforth College, a leading Roman Catholic public school, has been jailed for sexually abusing a girl when they met for violin lessons.

Dara de Cogan’s traumatised victim, who had seen him as a substitute father, feared she would be “thrown into hell”, a court heard.

She said that what happened had affected her religious beliefs but she was still a committed Catholic. “I’m afraid they will throw me into hell,” she said. She was still in therapy and suffering panic attacks and flashbacks.

De Cogan was jailed for 28 months, with half to be served, and was put on the sex offender register for ten years.

He bowed to the judge and smiled to his family before being handcuffed in the dock and taken into custody.

His wife of more than 25 years, who sat in the public gallery, was said by the defence to be standing by him.
