CAIRO (RNS) Pope Francis used the political capital he has built up with the Islamic world to issue a powerful condemnation of religion-inspired violence, calling on Muslim leaders to unite against terrorist acts carried out in the name of God.
Francis made his remarks Friday (April 28) at an international peace conference held at Al-Azhar university, a major center of Sunni-Islamic learning with global influence and expertise in interpreting the Quran.
The pontiffs speech opened a brief but momentous 27-hour trip to Cairo that comes less than three weeks after Palm Sunday attacks on two Coptic Christian churches in Egypt that left 45 dead and scores injured.
His visit, which is taking place under tight security, also comes against the backdrop of violence across the Middle East aimed at Christians and other religious minorities, as well as brutal battles among different Muslim communities.

Regardless of whether there's a cross, a moon, an eagle, USA or simply an "A" on the flag.

(82,333 posts)7. The better question is what army does not recruit chaplains.
Chaplains can't shoot their way into any army.

Why should Muslims be different?

(82,333 posts)8. A "condemnation of religion-inspired violence" is neither a crusade nor jihad.
Do you object to the Pope's condemnation of violence in the name of religion?

(7,323 posts)9. I object to his hypocrisy
First, condemn your own.

(82,333 posts)10. There's a Pope in Egypt at the Al Azhar mosque urging Muslim leaders to condemn violence.
He's condemning ISIS, and the Muslim Brotherhood for shrouding violence in the cloak of religion.
And you want him to talk about Urban II and Saladin?
