The Conscience Protection Act would forbid discrimination against a health care provider based on the provider's refusal to be involved in, or provide coverage for, abortion.
According to the Bishops statement, Congress is considering whether to include the Conscience Protection Act in upcoming government funding legislation, known as the omnibus, that must pass by March 23rd to avoid a government shutdown.
Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, the USCCBs chair on Pro-Life Activities and Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, chair of the USCCB's Committee for Religious Liberty, state that "increasing and fierce attacks on conscience rights regarding abortion cry out for an immediate remedy. Nurses and other health care providers and institutions are being forced to choose between participating in abortions or leaving health care altogether.

This is nothing but the RCC continuing its quest to deny EVERYONE, not just Catholics, their reproductive rights.

(146,317 posts)1. The quest has been a long one, and it continues. We need to communicate
with our congressional representatives to counter this action by the Catholic Church hierarchy. It is obscene that a religious organization attempts to control the lives of people who are not part of the Catholic Church. How dare they?!?

(6,075 posts)2. How about my conscience?
My conscience tells me that a group that has a long history of conspiracy to commit and cover up abuse of children and women should be forced to disassociate itself from our health care institutions.
