Related: About this forumPersonal Opinions Regarding Religious Beliefs
are what we all have. They are based on our culture, our education, our readings, our experiences, and much, much more. Sometimes, people's personal opinions are based on solid evidence and research by ourselves or others. Sometimes, they are based only on faith or just belief about things, without any material evidence.
It is not an insult to say that what someone posts in a discussion area like this on is "just their opinion." Still, some use that accusation in an attempt to discount another's words. Any time we use our own words to express our own thoughts and concepts, we are stating our opinion. If we post something someone else wrote, we are expressing that writer's opinion. If we add our own opinion of that writing, we are commenting on someone else's opinion.
The differences between opinions lies in how they are formed. Opinions based on actual physical evidence and scientific research are more likely to be correct than opinions based only on beliefs and faith that lack real evidence. However, both remain opinions, and are subject to discussion and disagreement.
We should not try to insult someone by accusing that person of having "just an opinion." Such insults are meaningless. Everyone has opinions here.
This post, like all other posts in my own words, represents my opinion. A statement to that effect is in my signature line.

(146,254 posts)That is a meaningless accusation, which reflects more against the accuser than the accused.

(146,254 posts)It indicates a lack of thought and reason. The attack itself is nothing more than a personal opinion, making it self-attacking. Personally, I'm glad to see people's own opinions about things. I find them more valuable and interesting than copy-and-paste postings of portions of the opinions of people other than the poster. Often, the poster doesn't even know anything about the person they're quoting, nor about the source where that opinion was found.
I much prefer to see a poster's own opinion and some explanation of the thinking that went into it.

(9,116 posts)Do the people calling for Sigma 6 certainty on every fucking post require the same of themselves when making everyday decisions? Probably not. Otherwise, I suspect, our dear friend would spend the rest of his natural life at the gas pump trying to determine whether he should use regular or premium.
