Archbishop's claims against Pope Francis "like an earthquake for the church"

Pope Francis refused to answer accusations that he knew about alleged sex abuse by a former cardinal, and allowed him to serve unpunished.

While the pope was in Ireland and meeting sex abuse victims, a former Vatican official made the claims in a letter. This came less than two weeks after a scathing grand jury report in Pennsylvania detailed sex abuse in the Catholic Church.

The 11-page letter by Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the former Vatican Ambassador to the U.S., claims that in 2013 he told Pope Francis of the allegations of sex abuse against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. But, he writes, the pontiff ignored that, and allowed McCarrick to continue to publicly serve the church for another five years.

The explosive letter called on Pope Francis to resign.

"I will not say a word about this," Pope Francis told reporters. "I believe the document speaks for itself."

1. And there it is. Apparently, Il Papa is going to soundly condemn sexual abuse

of children by priests and others in the church, but do nothing beyond that. Same old story, I suppose. All those decades and centuries. New boss - same as the old boss.

4. Vigano is an ultra conservative homophobic bigot.

He is attacking Bergoglio now as he sees an opportunity to oust a pope he views as too liberal on homosexuality. To put this in perspective Bergoglio has done nothing to change RCC policy on homosexuality.

5. While in America, Vigano undoubtedly contacted arch-conservatives

Like Archbishop Chaput, of the conservative Catholic capital, Philadelphia. And representatives of EWTN, EWRN. Probably Burke, and. Cardinal Law, in America or in exile.

For his own part, McCarrick was probably the most liberal Catholic authority in America. Though even he made mistakes too.

Hard to find any heroes at all, anywhere in the Church.

Not a single one.

Though for what it's worth, Pope Francis is the most liberal pope in modern memory.

7. Perhaps, but his allegations are still very much a problem for Frank

Even Frank's predecessor essentially put McCarrick on house arrest for raping children. Frank let him out, and it's going to be very hard for him to explain why. Gross incompetence or apathy towards a child rapist are the only two obvious possibilities, and the first one is remote.
