Feds Tell Faith Leaders 'No More Prayer' Outside Broadview Facility

In a possible violation of the First Amendment, federal officials instructed demonstrators to stop holding religious gatherings outside the immigration processing facility in suburban Broadview after faith leaders were denied entry to the building for the third time on Friday.

BROADVIEW – Federal authorities told demonstrators Friday that there would be “no more prayer” in front of or inside the Broadview ICE facility, in a move that mystified local leaders and raised legal questions.

A federal representative delivered the news to a huddle of faith leaders and activists standing outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility Friday, speaking after faith leaders were denied entry to the building for the third time Friday.

Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills, whose department helped facilitate the phone call, said that he was “trying to figure out” in discussions with Mayor Katrina Thompson and an attorney if a federal agency could legally ban religious gatherings on land owned by the village. Religious groups previously have been allowed to practice outside the facility, he said.

I don't understand why they even have to ask the question.

There are plenty of things that the federal government can do on federal property... for example I was stopped and searched for drugs in my car frequently, you can forget OSHA regulations, etc.

However, at the gate to the facility there was a large painted red stripe right across the pavement. The demarcation line for the federal property. The feds absolutely cannot control what happens outside that line ( and usually the fence or building perimeter that defines the extent of federal property ). Seriously.

If I ware the faith leaders holding services outside the facility... I would ask the local and state police to come with ( and plenty of lawyers ) and ignore any requests from CBP or ICE. They cannot control what happens on non-federal land. The most they can do is try to arrest someone for "impeding federal law enforcement"... so do not block their cars from entering or exiting... but you can stand on the sidewalk or open field and pray pray pray... loudly if you so desire.

No right to pray in an authorized area.

Denial of mass and Holy Communion for the detainees.

Catholic Vance must be hopping mad about this situation.
