Liberal Catholics use election results to battle bishops

Washington (CNN) - Emboldened by the re-election of President Barack Obama, a cadre of liberal Catholic activists and groups is waging a campaign alleging that America's Catholic bishops are out of touch with Catholic laypeople.

The Catholic bishops, who are in Baltimore this week for a quarterly meeting, spoke out against the Obama administration during the election cycle over what they said were White House violations of religious freedom.

Some bishops also spoke out against legalized gay marriage and abortion rights, positions embraced by many Republicans.

A Sunday opinion piece in the National Catholic Reporter by Thomas Reese, a Jesuit priest at Georgetown University, hammered the bishops for their public proclamations during the campaign, saying the church leaders' “political strategy … is not working.”

1. Our local Catholic church

Always had political messages on their marquee and a dozen yard signs along the street. "40 days of life," "Fight for religious freedom," etc.

What about MY freedom from your patriarchal religion? I shouldn't have to read your condemnation of women's rights every time I drive through town.

7. As long as they are not promoting individual candidates, they have the right to do this.

Perhaps a campaign to counter their signs is in order?

We are only here due to the military, not because this is my "home." The majority of the locals happily agree with the politics of this church, so I'm just going to let them have their little signs.

I am just tired of being here, and the local church politics are just a reminder of how badly I want to leave.

Cardinal Timoty Dolan authorized payments to pedophile priests of up to $20,000 to get them to leave the priesthood when he was Archbishop of Milwaukee new documents have revealed.

Dolan had once described that allegation as “false,preposterous and unjust” but the archdiocese has now admitted that it occurred.

In a meeting with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Democrat, Cardinal Timothy Dolan stressed that he was resolutely opposed to the proposed Child Victims Act, which, he says, "unfairly" targets the Catholic Church.

"We feel that this is terribly unjust. It singles [out] the church and it would be, and I use the word purposefully, devastating for the life of the church," Dolan told reporters.

In actuality, the bill neither explicitly targets nor mentions the Catholic Church. However, due to the church's ongoing abuse scandals, the bill would likely cost Cardinal Dolan's diocese and others a good deal of money by making it easier for victims of pedophile priests to bring charges. The Catholic Church has been fighting to stem the losses of huge sums of money it has spent in litigation fees and payouts to victims as the ongoing abuse scandal continues to unfold in New York and around the world.

The act, which was introduced in the New York State Assembly and State Senate by Assembly member Margaret Markey and State Sen. Andrew Lanza respectively, would extend the statute of limitations on child abuse crimes by five years. Currently, victims can bring charges against their tormentors only before the victim has reached 23 years of age. The new bill would change the age to 28.

4. Fr. Richard McBrien

has pointed out that the bishops appointed by JPII and BXVI are about the worst crop in centuries. They are horrible pastors, dedicated to clerical power and hierarchical concentration of that power. They've done little but drive people off and create some of the biggest scandals in the history of the church.

...concentrate clerical power and eliminate ANY AND ALL criticism of his actions. JPII began a purge of the Curia that turned it decidedly right-wing.

Both JPII and BXVI have done everything they can and could to obsfucate any investigation into the pedophile scandals. Their actions have been shameful.

The Vicars of Christ on Earth? I think not.
