Pope Benedict: Church Must Stand Against "Intolerant Agnosticism"

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Pope Benedict said on Sunday that Roman Catholic leaders must have the courage to stand up to attacks by "intolerant agnosticism" prevalent in many countries.

The pope and the Church have come under increased attack because of their opposition to homosexual marriage and women priests. The pope has repeatedly denounced what he says are attempts to push religion out of public debate.

"Anyone who lives and proclaims the faith of the Church is on many points out of step with the prevalent way of thinking," he said. "The approval of the prevailing wisdom, however, is not the criterion to which we submit."

"Today's regnant agnosticism has its own dogmas and is extremely intolerant regarding anything that would question it and the criteria it employs," the pope said.

is clearly in need of a few whacks by a clue-by-four.

Unfortunately he's well guarded, so that's just not going to happen. The irony meter will continue to be pinned until the old fool kicks the bucket.

3. What is 'Intolerant Agnosticism'?

I thought the whole point of being agnostic is that you don't think you know the answer; how can that be intolerant?

Agnostics get bricks thhrown at them from both sides: conservative theists and atheists who call them dishonest cowards, neither of which allows them the dignity of self definition.

8. The pfrase he used was "regnant agnosticism", as in ruling ideology.

I suspect he used agnosticism because the rest of the homily was about truth, as in known truth.

He is, if nothing elses, an academic to the core.

9. Agree that intolerance of anyone's beliefs or lack of beliefs should be challenged.

C'mon Scott, intolerance is a problem for others. Bayers can spew whatever they want yet remain on their high horses criticizing others. IOKIYAB!

Just give me time to ask the chief agnostic, the guy who is exactly 50% infallible. That'll clear this all up.

The church's slippage into irrelevancy is entertaining to watch...

I recall reading in at least one of the gospels that he enjoined his followers to go forth with as few belongings as possible.

I don't see this much in the Pope and RCC as an organisation. If they became more 'Christ-like', stopped preaching intolerance towards LGBT'ers and woman and did a bit more with all that wealth they have accumulated than I might give a tinker's cuss or more about what they had to say.

Used by juvenile jackasses who think they're being clever all over the world. And of course, in the Vatican.
