Related: About this forumHalf of Christians Think Jesus Will Return Within 40 Years
Theologians and scholars have debated the Second Coming for centuries, arguing over when it will happen, if it can be predicted, and signs showing its imminent arrival. The Bible states that no one but God knows when Jesus will return and that the return will be swift and unexpected: No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.

(33,615 posts)think about the average driver, do you EVER want to see these people piloting a flying car?
Scary!

(611 posts)When that used flying car has been through three owners and is barely running, it conks out on some poor person who can barely keep it running. Look out below! And imagine the cost of flying car insurance. Yeeks.
Sadly, I think the Suck Fairy has visited my opinion of flying cars, since I was a kid. Stupid Suck Fairy. Made it hard for me to appreciate the Hobbit movie, too, for completely unrelated reasons. Umm.
So, flying cars bad. But I haven't given up on Cities on Mars. Gotta have some kind of sci-fi futurist dreamy-dream....

"Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place." which seems pretty clear that the end of mankind will happen within the lifetimes of his original followers.

(5,756 posts)Yep, the alleged Jesus allegedly did come back from the dead. You can read the varying and conflicting stories of that in the gospels that make the story just about as ridiculously false as Noah's great flood or the tower of Babel.

(101,361 posts)What is truly depressing is that only 48% of Republicans thought the Earth would be warmer by 2050, while 58% of white evangelicals thought the second coming is definite or probable. Given the high overlap between those groups, I suspect that if you asked either Republicans, or white evangelicals, what is more likely, both groups would pick the second coming. Science be damned, life is about them being the centre of the universe, isn't it? Ignore what science says will happen; ignore what your own scripture actually says about its promised second coming being at an unknown time; they just have to believe it's their time in the world that is the important one.

(removed my earlier objection to their figures when I realised they are now given the percentage of US Christians, when before it was the percentage of all respondents, including non-Christians)

Given the likelihood of the one, and the consequences of it, we may be well and truly fucked if the other doesn't (finally) happen in the next 40 years.
Of course, if it does, all of us atheists will be well and truly fucked regardless...no matter how you slice it, things are going to get much warmer for non-believers.

(13,029 posts)and to watching atheists, heathens and other evildoers be stung by scorpions, boiled in hot oil and made to listen to Yanni for a thousand years, would be greatly disappointed if that turned out to be the case.

(13,029 posts)to see how far back this type of question has been asked of people, and what percentages of people 50 or 100 years ago also thought that Jesus would be back in 40 years. It would also be interesting to show those results to the respondents for this poll, and then ask them again a week later and see if the numbers change.

(1,837 posts)his official titles, applied based on tribal affiliation to each new incoming potentate of ethiopia, coincidentally turned out to be, 'king of kings, lord of lords, and conquering lion of the tribe of judah'
legend has it he took down a plane with a spear from horseback when he took his country back from the fascists with the help of the nyabinghi warriors.
the 'league of nations' was also his idea.. the prototype for the united nations.
face it, christians of the world.. jesus returned and *you missed it*
NOW can we stop waiting for the end of the world?
