Scientists are closing in on a physiological explanation for the near death experience. A lot of people use this NDE phenomenon as proof people continue to exist after death.
We reasoned that if near-death experience stems from brain activity, neural correlates of consciousness should be identifiable in humans or animals even after the cessation of cerebral blood flow, said Borjigin.
In the study, rats displayed a surge of highly synchronized brain activity within 30 seconds of induced cardiac arrest, the activity of a highly aroused brain.
Dr George Mashour, assistant professor of anesthesiology and neurosurgery at U.M., said the extent of brain activity was a surprise.
In fact, at near-death, many known electrical signatures of consciousness exceeded levels found in the waking state, suggesting that the brain is capable of well-organized electrical activity during the early stage of clinical death, he said in a statement.

(58,162 posts)i had a heart attack and full cardiac arrest on the operating table. i do not remember anything until i woke up 5 days later. i`m one of the 2%-20% of people who actually survived the severity of this level of attack and has the level of functioning that i have. what really saved me was my wife knew cpr and kept my brain oxygenated.
in my opinion my brain may have been functioning but i was not aware of anything.
i did not see god or talk to jesus .

(1,582 posts)The question is whether they are the only ones who truely have NDE, or they are the only ones who remember it.

(146,218 posts)but I don't think there is sufficient data to back that up at this time.
Both religious and non-religious people report these events and the significance which they place in them varies widely.
If some people experience them religiously, who I am to say that they are mistaken.
Perhaps there will be a definitive answer in the future, but for now I think the waters are still pretty unclear.
